Singapore Biennale at City Hall 2008

I escaped Wednesday by burrowing into ‘wonder’, which is the theme of the Singapore Biennale 2008.
These are my favourites from the City Hall exhibit site, enjoy:

Exhibit 'Morakot' (Emerald)

The overwhelming weight of history and abandonement of the past is found in the video installation piece ‘Emerald’, which is the site of an old Thai hotel, well past its heyday.  Accelerating economy and corresponding nostalgia are central themes to this piece.

Exhibit 'Bachelor'

A book made of leather (copy of Wittgenstein’s Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus) dances in an aquarium aided by the currents of the water.

“In this work, I wanted the dream-like image to be dominant over the meaning or the material.” (Artist)

Quinessentially, art for art sake?
Exhibit 'Wreck of men'

Exhibit 'Wreck of men'

The video installation was filmed in the frozen lands, north of the Artic Circle, taking in the haunting daunting beauty of the landscape and ‘isolated people standing on (melting) floating iceberg’.

“Exposed to the erosion of time, they vanished into the emptiness. In silence and isolation, they are testimony of an existence which in disappearing, becomes a declaration of principles.” (quote)

Peace…without burning flags or bras or staging protests, environmental messages can be equally loud by flaunting what we already have.

Exhibit 'Blackfield'

This floor based installation piece comprises of thousands of small wispy metallic plants. Coloured on one side and dauntingly black on the other, depending on your point of entry (and corresponding point of view).
Fascinating, evoking a sense of wonder, suggesting a possible deeper message that the glass is half full/empty depending on one’s perception perhaps? One bleak  view of decay and monotony of a discoloured dream, and the reverse psychedelic colours. Lots of ‘woos’ and ‘ahhhs’. One of my favourites.

Others worthy of mention: Metamorphosis (video 9 mins), I’m not expensive (installation) and Canary (photography)- spooky!!!

Kids Biennale: They dont just draw smiling princesses, flowers or sheeps these days…

A $10 ticket grants you access to the City Hall and South Beach venue from now till 16 November.
